Holguín tackles environmental pollution

The 2014-2020 Pollution Source Eradication program is implemented in the Cuban eastern province of Holguín in order to improve environmental quality in the region.
The project, in charge of the provincial delegations of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) and Citma, gives priority to those facilities that contaminate supply sources, as well as basins, bays and the coastal zone.
“From June 2019 to the same date this year, seven environmental investments were completed, which contribute to the mitigation of environmental pollution in ecosystems: Residual Treatment System (STR) of the Roberto Escudero Polyclinic, from Guatemala; Rolando Ricardo Estrada Hospital; Ernesto Guevara Hospital, Nicaro; Antilla landfill and ecological pulper "El Carmen"; STR Porcino Güirabo of the Holguín-Tunas Military Agricultural Company and oxidation lagoon of the "El Yayal" Penitentiary Center, explained Norelis Peña Peña, Subdelegate for the Environment in the territory.
In the province, 236 pollutant sources by organic liquid residuals are registered, which affect water supply sources with an estimated disposal of 13,152 tons / year, according to the results of the sworn statements, in compliance with the Resolution 223 "Regulation of Administrative Control of Pollutant Sources".
In addition to water, the atmospheric pollution was also studied in the last period, with the updating of the provincial inventory and calculating emissions from the main 77 stationary sources. These estimates constitute a benchmark for minimizing risks associated with affecting the atmospheric environment and the effects on human health in the locations under study.
Similarly, voluntary declaration agreements were established with five companies in the territory for the elimination of ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
