The Nickel Research Center (Cediniq) in Moa is working in the production of pigments of different colors obtained from cobalt waste, which are supplied to the Ceramica Blanca Company in Holguin.
“We have the tests to use the pigment in liquid form, which by adding a resin can be used to make paint. Many pigments are made with the crusts of the Pedro Soto Company, others with the samples of minerals extracted from the 'Che Guevara' factory, cobalt oxide and nickel carbonate. It is also used for nickel plating of equipment such as fans, at the Impud factory in Santa Clara,” Pérez explained.
Tania Miladis Suárez, main specialist of Human Resources at Cediniq, explained that they currently have 20 accredited trials in the water matrix, in final products of the Commander Che Guevara Company and minerals.
“Our results will always be delimited in the lines of development of scientific-technological products for the improvement of the metallurgical efficiency of nickel companies; the diversification of production; improvements of current technologies; treatment and use of residuals; improvement of final products; and proposal of solutions for hazardous wastes; as well as the creation of innovation and development projects for nickel,”he argued.
With more than 30 years of experience in the analytical service to the nickel industry and in scientific-technological research projects, Cediniq is entirely state capital and is integrated into the Nickel Business Group.
The construction of a mini-refinery aimed at obtaining nickel and cobalt salts led to the production of the pigments; although according to Mariela Perez, Marketing Manager at the plant, animal food with vitamin B12 can also be produced, as well as cyanocobalamin. "Other pigments do not need high levels of refining during the production process, as they are made from the soil of Moa", she explained.

The product, which is marketed in powder, is used by Ceramica Blanca to color tiles and other products produced in the industry.
