Holguín will mark the World Cancer Day on February 4 with a plan of activities to boost prevention and self-care among the population.
The activities for the event are aimed at promoting healthy habits, because although there are risk factors for this non-modifiable malignant disease - age and inheritance - there are behaviors that can be changed, such as the wrong practice of smoking or drinking alcoholbeverages, in addition to eating junk foods.
From some years, oncological diseases are the first cause of death in several provinces of the country, including Holguín, where for the first time more than 2,000 patients were attended in consultation at the Territorial Oncology Center, while new cases in stages III and IV in lung, prostate and colon were increased.
This institution, attached to the general university hospital Vladimir Ilich Lenin and with coverage for several provinces in the eastern part of Cuba, performed 3,774 surgeries last year, while more than 10 thousand 370 patients were treated in Radiotherapy Service with 73 thousand 719 of applications.
This health center has achieved results in several scenarios, such as the Accreditation of Excellence achieved by the Medical Oncology specialty, awards at events or the start of new procedures, such as radioguided surgery in breast and penile cancer and 3D gynecological brachytherapy treatments, among others.
