The authenticity of the manufactured paper and the promotion of books by Cuban artists distinguish the work of the Cuadernos Papiro publishing house of Holguin, whose work is welcomed in cities such as Guadalajara, Santo Domingo, Santa Fe and Bogota.
Located the historic center of the city, the publishing house uses typologies of the eighteenth century and American machinery dating from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which work with their original pieces, the editor Manuel Arias Silveira told to the ACN news agency.
Since its founding in 1994, Cuadernos Papiro has published more than 40 books by renowned writers, including Carilda Oliver, Roberto Fernandez Retamar, Dulce Maria Loynaz and Angel Augier, he added.
Arias Silveira said that the exhibition and sale of its literary products in international events provide this Publishing House, the only one of its kind in eastern Cuba, an audience that waits every year for book fairs to bought new books.
During the visit of Pope Francis to Holguin, in September 2015, the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church received as a gift the book-art Devotion, which represents the cultural identity of the eastern city and is located in the Vatican, said Arias Silveira.
This work is one of the most representative creations of "Papiro", said the editor, which consists of three copies and includes a selection of texts dedicated to the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, the Patroness of Cuba.
According to Arias Silveira, the publisher expects to publish the Jose Marti's free verses translated into the English language and a selection of letters written by Cuban intellectuals to the Holguin writer Lalita Curbelo Barberan, the editor added.
He referred to the editing process of the book “Holguín, ínsula embrujada” as a special gift for the also known as the Cuban city of parks on the 300th anniversary of its foundation, to be celebrated in April 2020.
Ediciones Vigia of Matanzas and Cuadernos Papiro of Holguin are the only Cuban producers of art books, distinguished each with their own style, even when technology advances and formats change the smell of handmade paper.
