The five-star hotel Iberostar Holguin in Selection category, has won the National Award Free of Ozone Depleting Substances (SAO), granted by the CITMA Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.

Holguin has achieved this environmental award for the third consecutive year, on the occasion of the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer on September 16.

Iberostar Holguin, operated by the Spanish hotel group Iberostar since November 2018, opened on the north coast of the province with cooling equipment free of polluting gases, as part of the efforts of the industry to exclude the hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) of their facilities.

Holguin, highlighted in compliance with the action plan with a view to the elimination of HCFCs before 2030, when Cuba will be free of these substances, has 50 signatory entities of the voluntary declaration agreement for the elimination of ODS from 2013 until now.

Brisas Guardalavaca, Atlantico Guardalavaca, Pesquero Beach, Rio de Luna y Mares hotels, Fiesta Americana Hotel, Costa Verde Hotel and Paradisus Rio de Oro; as well as the Transtur, Emprestur and SERVISA Branch are among these entities.

Mr.Sc. Norkis Ochoa Aguilera, specialist in Environmental Management, explained that under the slogan “32 years of recovery of the ozone layer and the climate,” Holguin joins the celebration of the important environmental event with very specific actions, all directed to the fulfillment of the National Plan for the Elimination of HCFCs and other ODS, as well as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy savings, which implies reducing CO2 emissions.

Since 1994 the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, but in 1987 the Montreal Protocol had been signed, the first major global agreement on an environmental issue through which many nations dedicate the day to promote the elimination of polluting substances.

Since January 1, 2019, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol has been in force, which encourages the gradual elimination of greenhouse gases and global warming.
