Universities Contribution to Sustainable Development Highlighted in Holguin

The contribution of universities to the sustainable development of society was the main topic for debate on Thursday at the 9th International Scientific Conference of the University of Holguin, taking place until Friday at the Guardalavaca spa in this northeastern province.
 
Participants highlighted the promotion and sustainability in higher education centers in accordance with the knowledge acquired and the significance of achieving a balanced relationship in the economic, social and environmental spheres of the countries.

Isabel Torres Torres, rector of the University of Holguin, said that Cuba is one of the few countries in the world where a socialist project has been adopted to incorporate sustainability into development processes.

In Cuba, universities play an essential role, as from the management of the different teaching processes teachers protect the environment and promote its conservation in the face of the indiscriminate action of man.

Marisol Perez, vice-rector of Strategic Processes at the Holguin educational center, explained that the university has been inserted into this guideline in correspondence with the integral provincial development and the demands of the environment.

With the implementation in the teaching center of the Task Life plan of the Cuban State for the confrontation to the climate change, professionals are trained committed to the protection of nature.

It also contributes to the assurance of the availability and efficient use of water, with the aim of facing the drought and the application of adaptation measures to climate change, actions that also affect the community with the realization of extension projects as the sanitation of the coastal coast of the municipality of Frank País.

Other exchanges related to university research and innovation were developed towards the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda, approved by the United Nations General Assembly for sustainable development , which includes 17 objectives for this purpose.

The agenda also included the International Tourism Management Workshop, in which were announced the results achieved by the sector in 2018 and the projections for the current year, as well as their perspectives from the academic sphere at the University of Holguin.

Topics related to the importance of training leading managers, the environmental improvement of soils in areas of extreme drought and the need for physical exercises to enhance the respiratory system in patients with Spinocerebellar Ataxia type two, were also addressed in the Conference.

The event is attended by professionals and businessmen from some 20 countries and Cuba, who exchanged experiences and results of projects and promoted the strengthening of institutional links. / ACN
