The University of Holguín marks 58 years of academic work, distinguished by its contribution to regional development through the training of professionals and the dissemination of science and innovation.

For over half a century, this higher education institution has served as a benchmark in eastern Cuba, with more than 85,000 graduates now integrated into vital sectors of production and services, told the ACN news agency, Aniuska Ortiz Pérez, the institution’s rector.

In the current national context, the university—which holds an "Excellence" rating from the National Accreditation Board and offers 42 degree programs—is strengthening its role in preparing the human resources the country requires, she stated.

Ortiz Pérez explained that through approximately 43 postgraduate programs, 21 international projects, and various community outreach initiatives, the university addresses the needs of the nation, the region, and specific economic sectors.

She extended her congratulations to the founders, graduates, and staff across the university’s four campuses, municipal university centers, and two branches. She also expressed gratitude for the support of collaborators from both Cuba and around the world, who have helped the institution along its path of growth, dedication, and commitment over the years.

Furthermore, she noted that this anniversary serves as a starting point to reaffirm—within today’s complex environment—a commitment to comprehensive education, science in the service of development, and the noblest values of society.

The first higher education program in Holguín was established on November 4, 1968, with specializations affiliated with the Faculty of Pedagogical Sciences at the University of Oriente, paving the way for the creation of other such centers.

During the 2014–2015 academic year, the process of integrating higher education in the province brought together the institutions that now make up the University of Holguín, comprising the Oscar Lucero Moya, Celia Sánchez Manduley, José de la Luz y Caballero, and Manuel Fajardo campuses.
