The municipality of Banes, with more than 80, 000 inhabitants, was the venue this Wednesday for the main celebration of the 59th anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution, in recognition of the results achieved in 2017.
The event, held at Plaza Juan George Soto Cuesta, had the massive participation of residents in this city, also known as the archaeological city of Cuba for the large samples of the aboriginal population settled in that area.
Holguin province, with a population of over one million inhabitants, was distinguished during 2017 by the construction actions undertaken in different branches of the economy and services to the population and improvement of state infrastructures.
Luis Antonio Torres Iribar, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and its first secretary in the province, highlighted the results achieved in the different branches, despite the damage caused by the intense drought that affected the territory and the damage caused by Hurricane Irma, last September.
In that sense, he highlighted the recovery efforts of the damages caused by the devastating hurricane as it passed last September along the north coast of Cuba affecting 11,451 homes of which 5,930 houses have been repaired or built.
He also praised the projects promoted in the territory to progressively stabilize agricultural production, with new plantings in the areas most affected by the meteorological event and the increase in irrigation systems through the East-West water transfer.
Among other achievements in 017, the first secretary referred to the infant mortality rate of 3.32 deaths per thousand births, one of the lowest achieved in the territory at all times.
Regarding economy, Torres Iribar meant among other indicators, the increase in net sales in the commercial system, the advances in investments and key sectors of the economy and services and the surplus of more than 97 million pesos.
He also acknowledged the progress in the tourism sector, both by the increase in visitors and the growth prospects of hotel facilities and ongoing programs to enhance that branch, particularly in areas of the tourist pole being built on the peninsula of El Ramón de Antilla.
He also highlighted the stability maintained in the production of milk with more than two million liters above the delivery plan for the dairy industry and compliance with the sugar cane sowing program of the year up to 15, 000 hectares. / ACN
