The province of Holguín is promoting agricultural development through scientific research projects focused on addressing climate change, one of the region’s main priorities.
These initiatives aim to provide science-based solutions to mitigate the effects of this phenomenon on food production.
According to Zulema Reyes Bermúdez, technical director of the Provincial Meteorological Center, the programs focus on cultivating species resistant to adverse conditions such as saltwater intrusion and drought. In addition, priority is given to the production of root crops, vegetables, and grains using agroecological techniques that help improve soil quality.
Among the most significant projects launched in 2026 is one in the municipality of Gibara, which proposes tools to mitigate climate change through a technological package based on updated climate information.
Other initiatives include managing drought effects in sugarcane through the planting of tolerant species and adapting Robusta coffee cultivation in the province’s lowland áreas.
These efforts aim to strengthen food sovereignty, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas, while also enabling the planning of planting and harvesting cycles based on up-to-date climate data.
The Territorial Meteorological Center of Holguín supports these actions by providing scientific and technical services to farmers to improve crop yields. (Source: ACN)
