The Community Environmental Centers (CCA) in Holguín represent a sustainable bet for preserving nature, safeguarding over a thousand endemic species of flora and fauna in the province.

These institutions leave their mark on beaches, protected ecosystems, and vulnerable areas in municipalities like Rafael Freyre, Gibara, and Moa, prioritizing the involvement of new generations.

Coasts and mangroves are key protection scenarios, driven by community activists with support from specialists from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (Citma).

Norkis Ochoa Aguilera, head of the program in the territorial delegation of Citma, emphasizes ecological education as essential to counter climate change and human damage.

She said that Holguín stands out for its high endemism in Cuba; actions focus on informing about protected populations, characterized by their rarity and lack of common names.

The CCA protect native mountainous varieties such as polymita sulphurosa, Santa María majá, cartacuba, and brown-eyed stick lizard, all listed in Cuba's red books of flora and fauna.

Their activities include children's contests, educational talks, and partnerships with schools, museums, cultural entities, and economic actors; standout projects like Ecoarte from the Nickel Business Group involve over a hundred children in reforesting mining areas with species like pinus cubensis, celebrating environmental milestones, and spreading knowledge.

Faced with climate change, these centers bet on a sustainable legacy, restoring natural conditions to damaged ecosystems for future generations. (Source:Radio Angulo)
