The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in Holguín province is carrying out various actions to preserve protected areas, as part of the environmental strategy that will complete its first five-year period in 2025.

These efforts aim to ensure the sustainability of ecosystems and contribute to the region’s natural balance.

According to Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, Citma’s deputy delegate, the management of these areas takes into account key factors such as biodiversity, nearby communities, and the risks associated with forest fires. All of this forms part of comprehensive conservation strategies that prioritize both natural resources and social well-being

One of the main achievements is the economic validation of ecosystems, a tool designed to promote the sustainable use of natural resources. This approach allows for income generation through rational exploitation without compromising Holguín’s natural heritage.

He added that in national parks such as Alejandro de Humboldt, Pico Cristal, and Mensura Piloto, concrete protection measures are being implemented. These include controlling invasive exotic species, preventing forest fires, monitoring poaching, and combating illegal wildlife trafficking, along with efforts to restore and preserve forest ecosystems.

Among the results is also the recovery of eroded soils and the improvement of 28 hectares of forest in terms of their populations, he pointed out.

A protected area is a clearly defined geographic space managed through legal means with the objective of guaranteeing the long-term conservation of nature, its ecosystem services, and its associated cultural values.

Cuba has more than 200 protected areas, including Pico Cristal National Park—the first in the country—established on April 12, 1930, in Holguín province, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to the preservation of its natural heritage. (Source: ACN)
