The installation of a new pipeline will allow better utilization of the water volumen from the Cacoyugüín dam, benefiting more than 85,000 residents in the northern part of Holguín, one of the areas most affected by long water supply interruptions.

Steel pipes for the pipeline were installed in recent days, and the first shutoff valve was repaired, said Rafael Montero, a specialist from the Territorial Delegation of Hydraulic Resources.

Work is also underway on the access road and the construction of a new structure to house the pump, aiming to shorten timelines and restore service as soon as possible, especially in areas where water rotations exceed 70 days.

At the same time, the rehabilitation of the main pumping station is progressing, with the repair of the intake tunnel, the water hammer system, and the dismantling of the well pipes, Montero explained.

In addition, through an agreement with the Héroes del 26 de Julio Mechanical Company, the system’s horizontal turbines are being restored, improving supply efficiency.

Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, territorial delegate for the sector, noted that the investment, exceeding 50 million pesos, will utilize water volume below the dam’s 72-meter level, where the current pumping reaches, thereby extending the reservoir's coverage.

Holguín is one of the Cuban provinces most affected by severe drought, prompting the implementation of an action plan primarily in the provincial capital, which includes the recovery of local water sources, alternatives aimed at reducing consumption in hospitals and key economic and service centers, and the rehabilitation of the main pumping stations.

At the same time, feasibility studies for well drilling are underway, water truck deliveries continue, and science and technological innovation are applied to address solutions to the shortage of equipment and spare parts. (Source: ACN)
