The members of the Holguín Rheumatology Chapter met this week in this city to share the scientific developments in the specialty, aimed at improving medical care for patients, especially pediatric patients.
During the III Territorial Workshop on Rheumatic Diseases in Childhood and Adolescence held here with the participation of distinguished professors from several municipalities and the province, Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis was discussed, a systemic and inflammatory condition affecting children under 18 years of age and one of the most common chronic diseases in in childhood.
In this regard, Dr. C. Susel Remedios, a second-level specialist in rheumatology, noted that specialized care is available for children with rheumatic diseases, such as juvenile arthritis, which, if not diagnosed early, can lead to severe after-effects for the child, severely delayed post-height development, and severely impaired adulthood, in this case with significant impairments to their social development and quality of life."
When referring to the prevalence of this disease in Holguín's children, she also noted that underdiagnosis is a challenge in the province, delaying timely care.
"Our fundamental mission is to keep children under control, with minimal disease activity or complete remission, so that they do not suffer from any of these complicated rheumatic diseases in adulthood, because they limit the patient socially by leading to disability," she added.
For his part, Dr. Alberto Alberteris Rodríguez, president of the Holguín Chapter of Rheumatology, highlighted that while these diseases are chronic and incurable, proper treatment can lead to symptom remission and improve patients' quality of life. The primary goal is to keep children with minimal disease activity or in remission, preventing complications in adulthood. This approach is supported by continuous professional training and the sharing of scientific advancements, strengthening medical care in the región.
