The Numa Food Production and Distribution Company in Holguín contributes to territorial self-sufficiency by advancing the strategy of creating farms and plots for self-consumption that allow the substitution of materials and the expansion of offers.
Kirenia Balada Peña, director of the entity, informed ACN that with the objective of improving services in the midst of the complex situation faced by the country, they inaugurated three farms located in the municipalities of Rafael Freyre, Mayarí and Antilla.
With 16 total hectares assigned to this use, they generated sources of employment and the vegetables and fruits produced are destined for the workers of the company and sales to the population, which in turn influences the decrease in prices by increasing the purchase options, Balada Peña said.
She added that they also have more than 14 hectares of plots of lands and vegetable gardens, many of them created in areas surrounding the production centres in all municipalities, from Calixto García to Moa, to take advantage of the available spaces for agricultural cultivation.
These initiatives allowed them to combine the products obtained with the preparation of new recipes and the substitution of ingredients, so that the demands of the population are met in a difficult context for the acquisition of raw materials such as flour or sugars, which are scarce and expensive on the foreign market, she said.
Balada Peña explained that they have not only been able to rescue a group of offers that were not prepared due to a shortage of ingredients, but they have also reduced costs and taken advantage of endogenous resources from each locality capable of raising the nutritional characteristics of what is produced, objectives that comply with what is stipulated in the Food Sovereignty Law.
She also mentioned that they have a strategic alliance with the University of Holguín focused on the construction of a livestock module on the "La Peña de Oliva" farm, owned by Rafael Freyre, which would enable the supply of meat, milk and eggs.
The exploitation of land designated for self-supply is one of the policies emphasized by the Cuban Government in order to increase agricultural activity in each locality and work center in such a way that it contributes to the supply of the territory, a task in which the province of Holguín has positive experiences in the Numa and Garbo companies.
