The Moa Nickel S.A. Company of Holguín promotes environmental management programs, with the aim to contribute to mitigate the damage caused by mining activity to nature.
Luis René Gendis Díaz, a specialist from that entity, told ACN that the projects start with the monitoring of components such as soil, water and land to determine their state before and after the irruption.
He pointed out that the effects on the environment begin from the extraction of the mineral, so reforestation with endemic species is one of the fundamental objectives of the business group.
These projects are extremely expensive but even so, investment is made with the idea of returning vitality to the ecosystems, indicated the specialist.
For her part, Melissa Palma, an engineer in the nickel industry, pointed out that the reuse of acid water resulting from the production process in the washing plants is also promoted, which results in savings in water resources.
By the end of October, she said, more than three million cubic meters of these waters had been recycled, which used to go into the environment and are now returned to the industry.
In addition, in the nickel companies, located in the municipality of Moa, some 200 kilometers from the provincial capital, environmental education actions are being developed through the Ecoarte project, aimed at reforestation, the protection of mangroves and cleaning the coast. (Source: ACN)
