The rehabilitation of the ecosystems of Pinares de Mayarí, which were affected by the large forest fire occurred in 2023, has been a constant for the specialists of the territorial delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in Holguín and other organizations involved.
“The main effects were linked to atmospheric pollution, due to the greenhouse gases released during those days, water contamination and soil damage due to landslides,” said Carlos Peña Rodríguez, head of the Terrestrial Ecosystems Department of the Holguín Environmental Services and Research Center.
He also said that the prejudices to the living elements of the ecosystem were manifested most evidently in the formation of pedestals and in the populations of species such as birds, reptiles and mollusks, which were harmed by the impact of the fire on their habitat.
“The conservation objects have been monitored, with the purpose of directing efforts towards the rehabilitation of each of the affected components,” he commented.
As he explained, the rehabilitation of plant ecosystems has been carried out naturally, allowing ecological successions and natural regeneration to take their course without human intervention and in an assisted manner, in which different organisms governed by Citma for the recovery of areas with a critical level of impact.
The prevention of forest fires is essential for the protection of the environment and the safety of communities, since their effects, in addition to being devastating, contribute to accelerating climate change.
