Holguín implements alternatives faced with teacher shortage

The increase in students per teacher and the increase in the load on programs and class hours are some of the alternatives implemented by the General Directorate of Education in Holguín to complete the necessary coverage of educators in the northeastern territory.
Composed of more than 1,300 schools where all levels of education are taught, including the mixed Calixto García and José Martí centers, the province of Holguín has the most extensive educational network in the country, Noel Pérez González, methodologist of the entity and head of Human Resources explained exclusively to ACN.
Despite the fact that the payment for years of service was approved, there is still a difficult situation with the completion of the necessary staff which, until the previous partial closure was 92 percent, he noted.
To solve this problem, the variants approved in Resolution 10/2024 are applied that lead to a salary increase for the teacher, among which are the increase in students per teacher and the addition of hours or programs to the usual amount, he added.
Other measures used are the incorporation of members of the centers' board of directors into the classrooms and temporary contracts in Youth and Adult Education, in which around 300 professionals from different organizations and more than 100 specialists from the production and services in Technical and Vocational Education (ETP), he specified.
Although to a lesser extent, Pérez González commented, officials and methodologists also go to campuses to teach classes, and workers from the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation are hired to cover this subject.
Currently, the Basic Secondary School and the ETP teaching levels have the greatest number of needs, mainly in the subjects of English and Mathematics, and the head city is one of the most affected territories, he said.
Pérez González added that the behavior of teaching coverage so far this year is evaluated, taking into account reinstated workers, Pedagogy graduates from the past calendar and new students of the degree who have been employed in the sector, which are a valuable force in the current context.
