The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in the province of Holguín is expanding the implementation of projects focused on sustainable agriculture with the aim of improving soil conditions and crop yields.

In addition to the programs already existing in municipalities such as Sagua de Tánamo and Banes, which benefit from technological packages from international organizations, others will be added in Calixto García and Urbano Noris focused on promoting the use of agroecological techniques and resilience to climate change.

Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, provincial subdelegate of that organization, told to ACN that in these territories priority is given to training producers and the use of natural fertilizers with proven effectiveness such as worm humus.

Farmers are also trained in the sowing of pastures and forage to provide animal feed from species with high nutritional content and in view of the limitations on the importation of these inputs, caused by the global economic crisis, he said.

He pointed out among strategies of the agricultural programs in the municipalities, the expansion of demonstration polygons of soils and forest farms aimed at the experimental development of biofertilizers and the evaluation of seeds destined to the cultivation of species adapted to intense drought.

Based on these initiatives, which link science and innovation to government management, it is also possible to confront with local solutions the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba.

IHolguín promotes other initiatives to contribute to the development of agriculture and raise the living standard of vulnerable populations, prioritizing difficult-to-access localities belonging to the Turquino Plan, which occupies 20 percent of the surface of the eastern province.
