The Board of Directors of the Cuban Association of People with Intellectual Disabilities (ACPIDI) in the province of Holguín will enroll new members starting next August, as part of the care for this vulnerable population group.
This first stage consists of the accreditation of medical conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, one of the most prevalent in the eastern territory.
Sandra Gurris Hidalgo, an official of the Provincial Directorate of Public Health, told ACN that this activity, which aims to facilitate self-validation and social insertion, will include patients from the health areas of the main city, starting with the Julio Grave de Peralta polyclinic.
The process will have the participation of a multidisciplinary team of specialists, made up of a psychologist, a defectologist, a physiatrist, a doctor and a social worker, who will facilitate the individual evaluation, she highlighted.
For her part, Liudmila Batista García, president of the organization, added that due to the characteristics of this population group, the legal representatives of each patient will also be included, who are responsible for management, medical and psychosocial care.
She stressed that the promotion of the defense of rights and opportunities will also be materialized, as well as promoting access to new technologies and scientific research focused on these purposes.
Cuba has more than 150 thousand citizens with intellectual disabilities, of which more than 18 thousand are from the province of Holguín, which makes it the second in the country with the highest incidence of this indicator. (Source: ACN)
