Several scientific projects related to the mitigation of the effects of climate change were presented today in the first day of the Ecojoven event, which takes place in the city of Holguin.

The study of endemic species of the fauna of eastern Cuba, particularly amphibians and reptiles, was among the topics addressed in the event by some 30 participants who have made contributions to science and technological innovation.

This research contributes to inventories of collections and genera that may be vulnerable to increased temperature, indiscriminate tree felling, intense drought and heavy rainfall, among other consequences of climate variability, said David Fernandez, project specialist.

He pointed out that the research included the study of some 16 species, of which 12 are endemic to the karst hills of the eastern territory, ecosystems selected for monitoring.

Participants in the meeting also presented photos, posters and audiovisual materials related to the Tarea Vida, a plan by the Cuban state to reduce the vulnerability of coastal settlements in the face of the effects of climate change and the results of its implementation.

Among the projects presented were also the use of biogas as a renewable source of energy, the new collections of the Botanical Garden of Holguin and the treatment of solid waste.

Ecojoven aims to socialize and exchange experiences that pay tribute to the science, technology and innovation system, with the participation of members of the Youth Technical Brigades.

The event, organized by the Center for Environmental Research and Services of Holguin, is part of the activities of the Provincial Day for the Environment Day, which will conclude on June 30. / ACN
