Specialists in the province of Holguín carry out studies of archaeological collections, as part of the conservation programs of aboriginal culture in this Cuban region.
These materials come from excavations carried out by specialists from that institution founded more than 40 years ago, which is attached to the Environmental Research and Services Center in the city.
Lourdes del Rosario Pérez Iglesias, a specialist at the Eastern Center of Archeology based in the province, told ACN that among the objects under investigation it stand out the findings of ornaments and ceramic pieces in El Júcaro, El Porvenir and Esterito sites, in the north of the province.
She indicated that the recent searches offer a new vision of these collections for their cataloging and conservation strategies of the customs and traditions of the first settlers of the Greater Antilles.
Also in the entity, clay reproductions of idols and ornaments are made and sold at events, which allow these riches to be socialized, especially among adolescents and young people, the expert added.
Pérez Iglesias pointed out that new research is being promoted in the Cacoyugüín area, belonging to the municipality of Gibara, in which a site of scientific value is currently being studied.
The Central Eastern Department of Archeology also dedicates its work to the analysis of pre-Columbian cultures through projects that, in the last five years, have allowed the identification of traces of Indo-Hispanic contact in terms of ornaments, utilitarian objects, among other areas.
Holguín is one of the reference regions for the study of archeology. Some of the most important discoveries in the insular Caribbean have been made in this geographical area, such as the Chorro de Maíta Cemetery, located in Banes, recognized as one of the most important in the region. (Source: ACN)
