Two Holguín researchers participate in the Caravan from Science to the Furrow, sponsored by the World Food Program (WFP) and a group of national entities, which will tour five municipalities in the eastern provinces.

Dr. Alma Torres Gómez de Cadis Agüero, representing the University of Medical Sciences (UCMHo) and Dr. C Robert Manuel Leyva Martínez, from the department of the Agricultural Extension, Research and Training Unit of Holguín (UEICA), represent Holguín in this important project.

The Caravan, which will take place from June 24 to 29, is part of the project Strengthening the resilience of the local food system to natural disasters and climate change, with a nutritional approach to supply food to social protection networks.

During the tour of Manatí, Las Tunas; “Urbano Noris”, Holguín; Jiguani, Granma; Guamá, Santiago de Cuba and “Niceto Pérez”, Guantánamo, details of the diagnosis carried out in those places will be presented, where a low level of introduction of scientific-technical results into local food systems was evident.

Furthermore, little knowledge of the commercial varieties of different crops and their behavior in local agro-systems and low availability of seeds that respond to community preferences (productive and consumption), mainly due to insufficient communication channels between the Academia and actors of local food systems.

In order to reverse this problem, within the framework of the project it is planned, in accordance with the call for this event, to show scientific-technical results from the Academy, feedback on the needs for research and development of varieties from the food systems supported in the plan and constitute a collaboration network between academia and actors in local food systems.

The Caravan arrived this Monday at the Urbano Noris Agroindustrial Company of Holguín province, where scientific results from each institution related to food were presented.
