“Land restoration, resilience to drought and desertification” is the theme that accompanies global actions, regarding the World Environment Day on June 5, which calls for reflection on the importance of attention to the different environmental causes.
Within the framework of the date, the province of Holguín makes efforts to reduce damage to the environment and promotes the transition towards a circular economy, with much healthier lifestyles, whose positive impact is already perceptible in the tasks carried out in the territory to reverse environmental degradation.
At a recent press conference, it was informed about the implementation of the measures of the Sustainable management of forests and trees project and the work on the forestry program until 2030, based on the forest management project, forest dynamics and other indicators, which translate into promotion and recovery actions, which have benefited more than 13 thousand forested hectares.
On the other hand, the improvement and conservation of soils closed 2023 with more than 3 thousand hectares benefited in the basins, while progress is being made in the recovery of ecosystems in nickel mining areas, managing to reduce the passive environmental effects of mining.
Geovani Zaldívar Martínez, deputy delegate of the Environment at the territorial delegation of Citma, referred to the eight projects carried out last year by the Center for Environmental and Technological Research and Services. There are also seven projects under the Territorial Program for Sustainable Development of the Mountains approved in Holguín, in 2020 and 2022.
The reuse of crop residues for the production of worm castings and the use of dry must from the oxidation lagoons, as a substrate in the nurseries for the production of postures, are among the measures implemented in the polluting sources of the Turquino Plan.
In addition, the environmental damage of the fire in the Sierra de Nipe damaged more than 13 thousand hectares, mainly in the plateau of Pinares de Mayarí and the East, West and South slopes of Sierra de Nipe, which made it possible to diagnose the impacts of the incident, with greater specificity.
Regarding the management of protected areas, there was an increase in capabilities for surveillance and protection of park rangers and technicians, through the supply of equipment, means and tools.
Likewise, capacities have been strengthened for the conscious management of forest resources, the elimination of invasive exotic species, the correction of gullies and the execution of fire-fighting measures, based on the delivery of tools and means of protection to carry out these tasks.
The main challenges of the province to continue progress in environmental protection include the implementation of the Law of the Natural Resources System and the Environment, the increase in scientific knowledge and intersectoral connection, as well as the promotion of presence of environmental education in daily actions.
