The construction of the largest photovoltaic park for the generation of electrical energy using renewable sources in Cuba, began in the municipality of Mayari, Holguín province, with the preparation of the land.

According to the website Portal del Ciudadano of that town, its installation with Chinese technology, located in the vicinity of Corúa 5, in the town of Cajimaya, will have a generation capacity of 20 megawatts (MW) during daylight hours and its assembly must be completed by the end of 2024.

Renier Gómez Domínguez, responsible for operations at the provincial Electric Company, explained that it is one of the first parks of its type to be built in the country with the aim of reducing diesel consumption through the use of energy from the sun in electricity generation.

He also added that 32 hectares are being conditioned on the site, of which 20 of them will be occupied by 42 thousand solar panels, a significant contribution to the reduction of blackouts and the increase in generation capacity.

At this time, brigades are working on the removal of rock material and the vegetation layer in an area of 35 thousand square meters, in a first stage of the investment that must be concluded on June 5, commented Reinier Ferrer Sánchez, director of the Engineering Works Construction Company number 16.

The investment project also includes the construction of two parks of the same type for next year, but of five MW each, including one in the municipality of Cueto, which will have batteries capable of ensuring stability in voltage and frequency, he added.

As part of the country's strategy so that by 2030 clean energy represents 29 percent of the national energy matrix, photovoltaic solar has become one of the most advanced renewable sources in Cuba as a way to contribute to sovereignty energy and reduce the cost of fossil fuels.

In this sense, the Hydraulic Resources sector has installed solar panels in more than 70 pumping stations in Holguín, mainly in rural and difficult-to-access areas, in order to improve water supply.
