Challenges of journalism in the face of AI for debate in Holguín

The VII National Symposium of Journalism Apunto 2024 taking place in the city of Holguín on March 28 to 29 began with a conference on artificial intelligence (AI) from the perspective of journalism and computing.


In her opening remarks, Bárbara Sicilia Rojas, head of the Department of Social Communication at the University of Holguín, commented how AI is modifying the ways in which news is thought, written and designed, therefore, it constitutes a matter of singular relevance for the sector.

The variety of topics for debate will allow collective improvement from different perspectives, but aligned in the common purpose of achieving revolutionary changes in professional training, Sicilia Rojas said.

The agenda included a visit to the Holguín Technology Center, where students and teachers exchanged about the use of new modern tools for competent development from responsibility and truthfulness.

Roger Guerrero, director of the center, explained that artificial intelligence refers to computer systems that seek to imitate human cognitive function through machines and software with the aim of performing data processing and analysis tasks.

Furthermore, he commented on the way in which it can be used as a double-edged sword, by being able to go from being an ally, in terms of information generation and analysis, to acting as an enemy, in ethical issues of accreditation of the results.

For her part, student Yeema Martínez Yee presented a project on communication for development in Holguín, with global themes inserted in radio, television and social networks aimed at generating an Internet transmission channel for an audiovisual magazine.

The program of activities of the event also includes technology fairs, sales exhibitions, specialized panels and professional exchanges among participants. (Source: ACN)
