Holguín: Recovery actions carried out in Pinares de Mayarí

The areas affected in Pinares de Mayarí by a forest fire that lasted about 20 days on the months of February and March 2023, have benefited from various actions to achieve their gradual recovery.
“After the evaluation of environmental impacts, we designed the actions to be taken, considering the state before and after the fire,” explained Geovani Zaldívar Martínez, head of the Natural Resources department in the Territorial Delegation of Citma.
He added that the sustainable mountain development program had experience in researching the flora and fauna of that area of the municipality of Mayarí, which paved the way to implement timely reforestation strategies and care for endemic species and made feasible the field work project that has been carried out.
As he explained, the natural recovery after the rains has contributed to the regeneration of several plants and, consequently, to the return of various species to their natural habitat, after they were forced to move in search of shelter from the fire.
The specialist pointed out that, due to the drought, some seeds remain hidden underground, but the intense heat accelerates the germination process and today small sprouts are beginning to appear on the ground, as a sign that nature is renewing itself in a cycle that does not end.
Forest fires are extremely harmful to the environment and different ecosystems, so it is essential to raise awareness about the importance of their prevention.
