Groundwater Levels Increase in Holguin

Photo: Juan Pablo CarrerasMost of the hydrographic areas of the province of Holguin have enough resources to supply the population of several municipalities of eastern Cuba, which have groundwater as the main source of supply.
The favorable behavior of the rains during this year, when 598, 6 millimeters have been recorded, 138 percent with respect to the historical average, makes it possible that of the 17 hydrographic basins located in the province, only one is in critical conditions, two of them show an unfavorable situation and 14 have enough water stored.
This situation is much better than last year. In March, 2017 the reports of the Institute of Hydraulic Resources here indicated that the majority of the watersheds considerably decreased the level of its waters, two were almost dry and only three had a normal behavior.
Last May the rainfall in the province reached 207.7 millimeters, which exceeded 125 percent of the historical average for that period, a situation that will continue to favor the availability of the underground water stored.
