A project to promote self-sufficiency of rural schools and polytechnics is being developed in the province of Holguín, as part of the objectives of the current school year to promote food production.

This strategy is applied in the municipalities of Cacocum, Antilla, Banes, and Rafael Freyre with the aim to take advantage of the areas that can be used for the cultivation of food and vegetables for the self-consumption of students and teachers.

Dixán Mojena Arzuaga, an official in the education sector, told ACN that through this program, driven by agriculture, students become familiar with agroecological practices and vocational information about careers such as Agronomy.

He specified that the project also includes the environmental culture of new generations, through the development of actions aimed at achieving sustainable agriculture in the face of climatic events, such as intense drought, associated with global warming.

He stressed that the long-term goal is to also benefit vulnerable families in the community with donations of agricultural products, included in the social care for these groups provided by government authorities.

Among the sector's actions to comply with the Food Sovereignty Law, it also stands out the links between schools and urban gardens and community work focused on stimulating the movement of patios and plots.
