A project to reduce the possible effects caused by disasters in the eastern municipalities of the province of Holguín, is being developed by the University of Moa Antonio Núñez Jiménez, included in the studies of danger, vulnerability and risk (PVR) in the territory.

Beatriz Riverón Zaldívar, professor of Hydrogeology at the institution, highlighted to the press that this program allows the evaluation of variables such as landslides, forest fires, floods, drought and earthquakes, among other phenomena.

According to Riverón, they are involved in the implementation of the first phase of the project, which includes the creation of population protection plans to reduce human and material damage in the face of these catastrophes.

She indicated that the strategies, promoted in Moa, Sagua de Tánamo, Mayarí and Frank País, also allow increasing risk perception in vulnerable areas in the face of events such as drought and high intensity hurricanes, frequent in the Caribbean area.

Within these PVR studies in the province, other aspects are also investigated, including diseases in animals, in which the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment also participates.

Likewise, national and international projects are added to promote sustainable agriculture in these territories and the self-sufficiency of vulnerable communities, one of the government priorities in Cuba.
