The hydraulic resources system in the province of Holguín already has more than 50 photovoltaic pumping systems, as part of the program to change the energy matrix, one of the priorities of the sector in Cuba.
Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, territorial delegate of the branch, told ACN that this equipment has allowed the saving of around 20 thousand liters of fuel since its start-up more than a year ago, in addition to providing greater quality and stability in the service to 26 thousand residents of rural and difficult-to-access areas.
He highlighted that the stations include La Amelia-Mulas, El Manguito, Batey Matamoros, Yaguabo, the Oscar Lucero community, Santa Cruz and the Cacocum water treatment plant, with a power of 37 kilowatts, the largest installed in the country to date.
The projects cover the creation of infrastructure to guarantee the operation of the equipment, as well as training actions for operators and managers by specialized brigades in 11 of the 14 municipalities of the eastern territory, he explained.
The change in the energy matrix in the hydraulic sector also extends to the provinces of Pinar del Río, Cienfuegos and Las Tunas and has among its objectives savings in maintenance costs, stability in water pumping and reduction in use of fossil fuels through the replacement of more than three thousand pieces of equipment, 37 percent of the installed capacity.
Since 2014, in Cuba there has been a strategy for the exploitation of renewable energy sources that includes biomass, hydroelectric, solar and wind, with the purpose of replacing the electricity generation matrix.
Holguín has some 1,830 solar panels located in 25 institutions in sectors such as Education, despite the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba, imposed since 1962. (Source: ACN)
