The work strategies of the Maternal and Child Care Program (Pami) in Holguín to promote its results includes the project Respectful maternal and neonatal care, with the aim to facilitate that pregnancy becomes a pleasant experience of motherhood and paternity.
The project will be first implemented in health areas of the Pedro Díaz Cuello polyclinic in main municipality, to gradually extend it to other localities in the territory and care centers, such as the Hogar Materno 8 de Marzo and the V.I. University General Hospital Lenin, where the most births take place each year in the country.
Loida Cortés de Quero, provincial coordinator of the Project, said that it will be a process to begin in the family since the pregnancy is confirmed, from then to instruct the woman, couple and other relatives about different aspects related to pregnancy, birth of the child, as well as the care to be provided after birth, psychoprophylaxis sections and exercises.
She pointed out that the guidance and preparation offered to the couple will allow them to assume pregnancy and childbirth as natural processes included in the family's life cycle, ending the project at the end of breastfeeding, which must be exclusive until the six months after birth.
Cortés de Quero explained that the term respectful birth or humanized birth refers to a type of care during this period, characterized by respect for the rights of parents and children at the time of birth. “It considers the woman's values, beliefs and feelings, preserving her dignity and autonomy during the birth process.”
In particular, she referred to the important role of doctors, nursing staff, psychologists, rehabilitators, among others, in the evaluation and results of the process.
This new project, with a scientific and humanistic approach, includes six essential objectives to help raise the program's indicators, in favor of quality and reproductive health in the territory, among the most populated in the country and with important results of Pami, specifically in maternal and infant mortality in children under one year of age.
