Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, checked today the implementation of the Food Sovereignty Law in the municipality of Cacocum, as part of the government visit to the eastern province of Holguín.

This agricultural territory, located south of the provincial capital, requires about a thousand tons of food, vegetables, grains, fruits and oilseeds for self-consumption, a figure that has not yet been reached with a considerable deficit in fiber.

The Cuban President stressed the need to increase food offers at a good price and with quality, which is why productive plans must focus on this purpose, promoting self-sufficiency at the local level.

He added that this problem must be deeply analyzed because in the global context, food prices have increased, especially grains such as beans and wheat.

Díaz-Canel commented that efficiency is essential through the generalization of good experiences in milk and meat production, which are still insufficient to meet the nutritional demands of the population.

He also specified the need of maintaining energy saving measures, among them the transportation of basic food baskets and various crops through railway buses, which will allow greater availability of fuel for electricity generation.

Among the experiences presented during the meeting, it stands out the education sector, as there are three self-consumption farms linked to short-cycle crops for feeding students and the teaching staff.

As part of his visit to the municipality, the Head of State exchanged with residents of the Yaguabo community , affected by the floods last June, and was interested in the recovery of the homes, roads and institutions of that population settlement.

Accompanying the president were Alejandro Gil Fernández, deputy prime minister of the Republic of Cuba and head of Economy and Planning; Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary in Holguín, as well as local authorities.
