A new park of solar panels donated by the government of the People's Republic of China will be installed in the Holguín municipality of Mayarí, as part of the change in the energy matrix in Cuba, which depends 95 percent on fossil fuels.

The park will be located in the area known as Serones, in Guaro district and will have a generation capacity of five megawatts through the use of sunlight, according to journalist Emilio Rodríguez Pupo, from Radio Mayarí.

This contribution represents 40 percent of the electricity demanded by the Mayarí territory, while it will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, harmful to the ozone layer.

The project is currently in the initial phase and the conditions of the land and the necessary assurances in the execution of the construction works and assembly are being evaluated.

The donation, which exceeds 114 million dollars, will also allow the gradual installation of photovoltaic parks in the municipalities of Holguín, Banes, Sagua de Tánamo, Rafael Freyre, Urbano Noris, Gibara.

In the eastern territory, the use of solar panels is also promoted in hard-to-reach communities in Báguano and schools in the 14 municipalities through international solidarity networks from countries such as Canada and Luxembourg.

A solar panel or solar module is a device that captures the energy of solar radiation for use. It includes solar collectors, usually used to produce domestic hot water using solar thermal energy, and photovoltaic panels, used to generate electricity using photovoltaic solar energy.
