Martín Arovén, member of the Sweden-Cuba Friendship Association and Coordinator of the "A Container for Cuba" initiative, received in Holguín expressions of gratitude for the donations of equipment and other supplies to various sectors of society to alleviate the tense situation in the country as a result of the U.S. blockade against the island.

The welcome ceremony took place at the headquarters of the provincial delegation of Icap, in the context of the "Day for Peace and against the Blockade", in which representatives of the Popular Power, the provincial directorate of Public Health and healthcare centers benefited with the donations.

The 18 tons of equipment, implements and supplies donated by solidarity groups from Sweden, Denmark and Norway benefited the education, agriculture, electronics and construction sectors in this eastern province of Cuba.

"Both the workers and the patients appreciate this gesture of solidarity, because it solves part of the needs we have, allows us to keep the services active and relieves pain," explained Lic. Sandra Leyva Escalona, head of sterilization control at the Máximo Gómez polyclinic of this city.

She added that in this center provides consultations to patients with HIV-AIDS and infertility. "Implants and other services are carried out, for which, many times we do not have the necessary means, such as needles, gloves, material for diabetic foot cures, pamper for bedridden people and adhesive tape”.

For her part, Dr. C Jacqueline Meduano Montero, in charge of the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (CIRAH) in the territory recognized the usefulness of the instruments provided for the care of patients suffering from this disease, which has the highest prevalence rates worldwide in Holguín.

Dr. Rebeca Robles García, official in charge of institutional communication and international relations, in the provincial Directorate of Public Health, offered general details about the donation, the control of its distribution and use.

The friends who bring the donations respond to many people and solidarity groups who dedicate time and efforts to break the US blockade and deserve to know the destination of each resource contributed.

For his part, Arovén thanked the transparency of this process of reception, distribution and use of the donations, noting that "they are the result of a lot of work, based on the obstacles imposed by the banks, as a result of the extraterritorial nature of the hostile policy imposed by the U.S. Government; however, we closed the 18-month stage with the purposes fulfilled and more than a hundred activities held in 20 Swedish cities”.

He added that the solidarity movement with Cuba is growing and strengthening, since “we now have more than 1,600 members in our Association, with 8 departments and contact people in 37 locations in Sweden. We know that everything we do is just a drop of water in the ocean, but it is important and necessary that we do it, because Cuba needs it”.
