Holguín: Cuban Deputy Minister checks preparations for new school year

Cira Piñeiro Alonso, First Deputy Minister of Education, checked the preparations for the 2023-2024 school year in the northeastern province of Holguín, to begin on September 4.


Accompanied by Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, member of the Central Committee and first secretary of the Party in Holguín, and Manuel Hernández Aguilera, Governor of the province, the Deputy Minister referred to the characteristics of the school year, the first after COVID-19 with 46 weeks classes, which guarantees greater presence in the processes.

In this sense, she addressed the priorities of this period related to the demands in the formative work in the search for its integrality and the implementation of the transformations of the Third educational improvement.

At the meeting, held at the Expoholguín fairgrounds, with the presence of directors of the sector, provincial schools, organizations and mass organizations, Piñeiro Alonso addressed the need to strengthen the comprehensive care plan for teachers based on their approaches and proposals in exchange with them.

Luis Felipe Batista Rodríguez, general director of Education in Holguín, said that in the province, 1,330 educational institutions will open their doors to an enrollment of around 141,000 students, 1,500 less than the previous year. The largest number of students is concentrated in the pre-university educational level.

The teaching coverage is at 97.3 percent. There is a need for more than 600 teachers that will be covered with alternatives, especially in the provincial capital, where there is the greatest impact, added Batista Rodríguez.

On the material base of study and life, there are the minimum essential conditions to start the new stage, while the later arrival of the textbooks originated in the improvement is expected.

He pointed out that vocational training and professional guidance towards teaching careers and political-ideological and preventive work remain a priority, since there are more than 10,000 children in vulnerable situations in the province.
