The municipality of Antilla in Holguín stands out among the rice producers in the province, a territory that plans to harvest more than 200 tons of wet husk cereal his season.

Four productive forms develop rice production in this territory in the towns of Deleite, Los Pinos and Calabaza, which was recently joined by two farms belonging to Azcuba and the Military Construction Unit, reported Carlos Alberto Xiques, mayor of the municipality.

The CCS Ramón Siam Portelles, located in the People’s Council of Deleite, stands for the results in this program, to which they have been inserted since its creation in 2005.

Reinaldo Lara Sablón, vice president of the CCS and one of the cooperative's rice producers, referred to the progress experienced not only in promoting areas for the cultivation of cereal but also the interest aroused among producers.

Advised by Carlos Nelson Escalona, an extensionist from the Grain Research Institute, and by specialists from the Guatemala Company in the municipality of Mayarí, they appropriated the knowledge and obtained support to grow in these productions.

“We started empirically and we already have extension producers. We went to Havana and Bayamo to meet with experts from other producing countries and progressively acquired the skills to grow crops,” he said.

Reinaldo comments that yields fluctuate around four tons (t) per hectare. But in the current harvest, due to the lack of the technological package, they did not achieve those volumes.

"We want to increase planting to 200 ha in the next harvest, but we need some means, such as machinery and technology, to exploit other agroecological alternatives that favor yield, and also to be able to bring water to the most intricate places and far from the canal Nipe-Deleite, from which we benefit”, added Reinaldo.

Regarding the final destination of the productions, the managers stressed that it is first marketed in the community and in the municipal seat of Antilla.

"Our aspiration is to continue growing in the productions according to the conditions that we are creating and to extend the commercialization to the provincial capital," Reinaldo concluded.
