The Luxembourg-Cuba solidarity network contributes in the province of Holguín to the use of renewable energy through projects for the installation of photovoltaic panels in this eastern territory, the third most populated in Cuba.

Alexander Leyva Valdespino, president of the Cuban Society for the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources and Environmental Respect (CUBASOLAR), told ACN that the installation of hydraulic pumps in communities with difficult access stands out among the benefits.

He pointed out that the residents in these areas of the municipality of Báguano, did not previously have this service due to limitations in electricity generation and the intricate geography of the locality.

The project also extends to pumping systems on farms in that municipality and La Melba, in Moa, one of the prioritized territories in the government plan for the transformation of vulnerable neighborhoods in Holguín, he indicated.

Leyva Valdespino commented that educational, social and service institutions benefit from this program, including elementary schools, bakeries and day care centers, where solar heaters are also installed with the aim of reducing the demands for electricity generated from fossil fuels.

The Luxembourg-Cuba Solidarity Network is a non-governmental organization, which since 2014 finances projects to promote local development and the use of renewable energy sources in several provinces, including Holguín and Villa Clara.

The country has more than 245,000 solar panels installed mainly in isolated and difficult-to-access communities, and 162 hydroelectric plants, which contributes to replacing the energy matrix that depends on more than 95 percent of oil.
