The flooding caused by the swelling of the Salado and Matamoros rivers, due to the heavy rains of recent days, isolated 194 inhabitants of the Altagracia community, in the municipality of Cacocum, in Holguín, where no greater damages are reported due to compliance with the measures established for the protection of the population and the economy in the face of such adversities.

The member of the Central Committee of the Party and first secretary in Holguín, Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez - accompanied by his counterpart in Cacocum, Noris Dayli González Pereda and other authorities - evaluated the complex situation of that community, due to the collapse of a factory work in the place known as El Tronchón and the saturation of the soils.

It is estimated that some 157 hectares of cane, various crops and fruit trees, in Altagracia and Limoncito were affected by the floods generated by the intense and prolonged rains, whose average in the last three months exceeds 900 millimeters in that territory, with an annual average of 1,200 mm.

González Pereda said that since the passage of Hurricane Ike, in 2008, that territory did not register such high levels of rainfall, which contrasts with the intense and prolonged drought suffered by farmers who, in the case of Altagracia, had to appeal to small water reservoirs or to access it by pulling it with oxen from the canals, for the animal consumption and some crops.

Both in Altagracia and Limoncito, there are milk, meat, root vegetables and fruit trees producers, who are associated with CCS Conrado Benítez and UBPC José Garcerán, respectively, but the humidity in the fields prevents the emerging harvest of some products.

Santiesteban Velázquez attested to the tranquility of the inhabitants of Altagracia and the unity of all the factors of the People’s Council and the municipality in these moments of difficulties and indicated the attention to vulnerable people, the preservation of drinking water sources, the alternatives for transportation and health services, and once this eventuality has passed, work hard to improve, as far as possible, the living conditions of the population.
