In correspondence with its research tradition, the province of Holguín won two National Awards from the Cuban Academy of Science (ACC) this year, both of high scientific and social impact, which are based on the results of studies implemented in this eastern territory.
The study "Management of the psychological safety of health personnel in the health emergency due to COVID-19", by the Master in Health Psychology Ana Karina Gutiérrez Álvarez, together with a group of colleagues from the Lucía Íñiguez Clinical Surgical Hospital, turned a care protocol in the midst of the pandemic into a project, with extensive benefits for workers in the sector and the general population.
Regarding the implementation of this new aid system, Ana Karina said that "contrary to what some may think, Health personnel in Cuba and the rest of the world also suffer at times when they must face situations of health emergency, disasters or other exceptional scenarios, such as those experienced by the COVID-19 pandemic”.
Based on this knowledge, they felt the need to increase the resilience capacity of health personnel linked to suspects or patients with COVID-19, through the management of psychological safety, carried out in two stages.
Thus, the instruments used by the group, part of the protocol and its results went beyond the borders of the country and today are at the reach of a click in about 15 high-reach publications, including Scopus, Scielo, Latindex, and Lilacs; in addition to being part of the National Action Protocol for COVID-19 and being applied by the National Group of Health Psychology, of the Ministry of Public Health.
The other prize was delivered to "Translational and innovative approach to research on ataxias and polyglutamine diseases in Cuba: compendium of two books", by DrCs Luis Velázquez Pérez, director for more than 15 years of the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (CIRAH) in Holguín.
Velázquez Pérez, president of the ACC, together with two other authors, "summarizes in two texts the scientific work and the innovative and translational work, as well as the social and historical impact of Cuban research on hereditary ataxias and polyglutamine diseases."
The scientists’ work outlines "the epidemiological studies of national scope carried out in Cuba and unique on an international scale and will contribute to the training of human resources in this area of knowledge”.
Regarding the prizes awarded to Holguín researchers, the President of the ACC wrote that in this province “there is a tradition of advances in science and technological innovation. It has a branch of the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the only health science and technological innovation entity dedicated to hereditary ataxias, whose services are international in scope.
