Holguín: Productive linkages favor nickel production

The linkage between the Pedro Soto Alba Company and the XL Anniversary of the October Revolution (KTP) in Holguín province, makes it possible to improve the production of nickel, one of the main exportable items in Cuba.
The collaboration between the two industries also facilitates the substitution of imports and the use of local resources, priorities within the improvement programs of the socialist state enterprise.
Dania Betancourt Peña, chief specialist of the entity's business area, told the Cuban News Agency that the nickel company provides the raw material, which is used to manufacture, in the factory's workshops, the components needed in the metal reduction furnaces, whose deposits are concentrated in Moa.
She specified that this agreement also reduces the waiting times, which are several months in the case of acquiring the parts and pieces in third countries, increased by the tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba.
Betancourt Peña pointed out that the factory, which belongs to the steel-mechanic industry, has also developed a prototype of a cart coupled to a tractor, already used by the communal services in the collection of solid waste and environmental sanitation.
KTP, founded on July 27, 1977 by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, was built in Holguin as a result of the collaboration with the former Soviet Union, in order to boost this branch in Cuba, and for more than 40 years it has been among the national leaders in import substitution.
