Cuban Press Day celebrated in Holguín

The celebrations for the Cuban Press Day concluded Tuesday in Holguín with the delivery of the Journalism Prize for the Work of Life "Abraham Portuondo" to Alfredo Carralero Hernández.


Carralero Hernández, chief correspondent of the Cuban News Agency (ACN) until his retirement in 2022, was awarded due to his more than 40 years dedicated to journalistic work in various provinces and media.

In the ceremony, which took place in the Solemn Room of Plaza de la Revolución Mayor General Calixto García, it was also delivered he Ax of Holguín, the highest recognition conferred by the Government in the province, to Aroldo García Fombellida, correspondent for Radio Rebelde, and the Coat of Arms of Holguín to Fabio Ochoa Olivera, from Radio Reloj in this territory.

The Raúl Gómez García distinction, granted by the National Union of Culture Workers, was also awarded to Lidia Beatriz Galván and Fabio Ochoa Olivera for their contributions to the sector for more than 25 years.

Yanela Ruiz González and Yamilé Palacios Vidal, both belonging to the delegation of the ¡ahora! newspaper, received the Félix Elmusa medal, which is awarded by the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) to professionals of the union for more than 15 years at work from the press.

Germán Veloz Placencia, president of UPEC in the province, after evoking historical events in the eastern region, said that they have been present in the work of colleagues deserving of the recognition with which they were distinguished.

He asserted that Holguín journalists have various challenges, among which he highlighted the importance of having a press system capable of self-sustaining, modern and reliable for the Revolution and the people.

Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary in the province, and Julio César Estupiñán Rodríguez, governor of Holguín, among other political and government authorities, participated in the event.

The celebrations for the Cuban Press Day in the eastern territory included various activities, such as the constitution of the Félix Arencibia Specialized Photography Club, a meeting with the creative women of the sector and the meetings with sources and audiences, evoking in each stage the figure of José Martí on the 170th anniversary of his birth.
