Cuban Prime Minister congratulates the residents of Gibara

Manuel Marrero Cruz, Prime Minister of Cuba, congratulated the residents of Gibara, a city located in the province of Holguín, on the occasion of the commemoration of the anniversary of the founding of the town.


“ I congratulate my dear Gibara, full of heritage, culture and history, which is celebrating the 206th anniversary of its foundation¨, said the Cuban head of government on Twitter.

Marrero Cruz thanked the citizens of that coastal city for their trust and recognized them for being a hospitable, hard-working, gentle and revolutionary people.

On January 16, 1817, in solemn ceremony, the first stone of the Fort of San Fernando was placed on the point of Yarey next to the Bay of Gibara, protected by the security that this defensive work began to inspire in its inhabitants.

Date that has been considered as the founding of the town, which later evolved to become a villa (La Villa Blanca) and currently the main city of the municipality, the main access by sea to the north of eastern Cuba.

Gibara is located on the north coast of Holguín and borders to the north with the Atlantic Ocean, and to the south, east and west with the municipalities of Holguín, Rafael Freyre, Calixto García and Jesús Menéndez de Las Tunas, respectively. (Source: ACN)
