The application of agroecology and soil protection techniques stands out among the actions implemented in the province of Holguín, as part of the programs of food sovereignty and strengthening of territorial capacities in the region.
Agricultural cooperatives such as Antonio Maceo, located in the municipality of Banes, with potential for various crops and the self-sufficiency of the community, stand out among the sites benefited by these practices.
Artemio Chacón Ramírez, a specialist from the department of soils in agriculture, told ACN that the methods are applied to more than 200 hectares treated with organic matter to reduce the negative effects of erosion.
He added that, based on the use of sustainable agriculture, yields have increased from four tons in 2020, to more than five in this year's harvests, as a sign of the effectiveness of the strategies designed.
He stressed that the use of renewable energy is being promoted, through the installation of solar panels in irrigation systems and biogas plants, efficient in generating electricity by taking advantage of waste from pig farming.
For her part, Norelis Peña, sub-delegate for the Environment in the eastern territory, indicated that among the procedures being carried out is also the training of producers on the use of organic fertilizers and agricultural mechanization, which contributes to replacing imported inputs with high costs in the international market.
The strategy includes the planting of varieties resistant to the effects of climate change, the monitoring of cultivation areas near protected areas and the creation of forest plots dedicated to responsible forest management and the use of wood, said Peña.
The national program of food sovereignty and nutritional education in Cuba promotes sustainable production in the long term, with respect for cultural diversity and environmental responsibility.
Within these purposes, the international Ecovalor project, which has an impact in several Cuban provinces such as Ciego de Ávila, Holguín, Las Tunas and Camagüey, proposes sustainability in land management and economic development in harmony with the environment.
