The protection of endemic species of flora in the mountainous areas of the province of Holguín is one of the priorities of the Environmental Research and Services Center (CISAT) of the eastern territory based on community education projects and actions.

The institution, located in the main city, extends activities for the recognition of varieties and their importance for the balance of ecosystems in places such as Pinares de Mayarí, among other communities in the Holguín mountain range.

Bertty Juan Almanza, specialist of that entity, told ACN that the strategy seeks to expand the education of adolescents and young people, through talks, tours of the natural habitat of the species and projection of audiovisual materials.

He explained that this is also one of the main objectives of a project for the identification of critically endangered species in the Sierra de Nipe developed by the Holguín Botanical Garden, which includes population monitoring and characterization of adult specimens suitable for reproduction.

He highlighted that among the plants included in the study, it highlights the Baccharis nipensis, Annona nipensis, Hibiscus maculatus subsp nipensis and Phidiasia lindavii, which due to their exclusivity and rarity do not have common names.

The biodiversity conservation programs in the mountainous area also include the Connecting Landscapes project, which has among its results the creation of natural biological corridors and the promotion of sustainable agriculture in areas of the Turquino Plan, where more than 200 exclusive varieties are found, said the specialist.

CISAT was founded on October 21, 1999 at the initiative of Dr. Rosa Elena Simeón, then Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, and is committed to archeology studies and natural resources, among other topics.

From its management, it also contributes to responding from science and research to the environmental problems of the province, including the loss of biodiversity, degradation and contamination of ecosystems.
