The University of Medical Sciences of Holguín (UCMHo), among those with the highest enrollment in Cuba, links its students to more than 40 community projects, as part of the improvement of the quality of life in vulnerable communities and the extension activities of the educational institution.
Among these programs, it stand out "Put a heart on health" and "Green is my city", linked to plans for the prevention and early detection of chronic non-communicable diseases and the use of natural and traditional medicine, respectively.
Dianisel Ballester, a specialist at the teaching center, explained that the projects extend through the Centro Ciudad Sur, Alcides Pino and Pueblo Nuevo People's Councils, located in the provincial capital, as well as mountainous areas with difficult access in municipalities such as Moa and Frank País.
Ballester highlighted that the activities are focused on health promotion, through the family doctor's and nurse's offices, on the prevention of cancer, diabetes mellitus and pregnancy in adolescence.
She added that the interventions include monitoring the elderly, pregnant women, infants, transplant patients, among other risk population groups, vulnerable to different chronic conditions.
The specialist specified that environmental preservation actions are included, such as the sanitation of rivers and coastal areas in municipalities such as Gibara and Banes, which is added to the comprehensive preparation within the Holguín House of High Studies.
On her part, Eliannis Pérez, a fifth-year student, stressed the importance of the links between doctor and patient and, in turn, with hospital services from the first years of training within the career.
UCMHo, founded 40 years ago, also prioritizes the training of foreign students and the accreditation of specialties by the National Board, including Natural and Traditional Medicine, Rheumatology and Pediatrics, among the priorities to achieve certification of excellence.
