Holguín is among the five Cuban provinces with the highest number of accidents on public roads, whose main cause is the indiscipline of drivers and pedestrians, thus a training course sponsored by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is taught here.
Mercedes Leyva Almaguer, a specialist from the Provincial Department of Health Promotion (DPPS), explained that adolescents from 12 to 15 years of age participate in this summer course, to train them as promoters in Driver Education.
The DPPS together with Road Safety specialists and the Directorate of Education develop this improvement action, with the aim of training boys of that age group on how to behave on the road, develop skills and abilities in first aid and promote the training of practices that allow them to act as provisional agents with their peers and family.
According to Leyva Almaguer, the training will conclude on August 12 with the appointment of the first Brigade of Promoters for Road Safety in the province, made up of 15 adolescents.
She explained that similar courses are taught in Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila, Cienfuegos and Havana, the provinces with the highest accident rate in the country.
The main accidents reported in Holguín on July were related to disrespect for the right of way, failure to control the vehicle, speeding, improper overtaking, technical malfunctions, pedestrian violations, among other infractions, which led to 71 incidents on the road and 72 injured.
