Holguín is among the five Cuban provinces where the Cubanacán hotel group expanded in 1988 through territorial delegations to attend to the emerging international tourism, after its constitution in 1987.

At that time, the Guardalavaca and the Havana hotels next to Villa Cabaña, as well as other existing facilities in that spa, would integrate the new specialized company, which from now on would be in charge of carrying out the tourist project in this eastern region of Cuba.

The architect Olides Rodríguez Pérez, in his capacity as director of Physical Planning in the province, at that time, would be commissioned, together with a multidisciplinary team, to draw up the first scheme of the tourist potentialities of the territory and, in turn, would be designated as delegate from Cubanacán here.

Today, this group in Holguín is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a notable increase in its operations in the summer season, according to Carlos Alberto Rodríguez, its representative here.

According to Rodríguez, this hotel entity currently sells some 1,798 rooms in Guardalavaca and the cities of Holguín and Gibara, the last ones with E Hotels, whose services are distinguished by their high standards and personalized attention for lovers of culture and heritage cities.

He explained that in Guardalavaca resort, with the main hotel plants of this group, it is distinguished by combining the new with the old, as there are the first Cubanacán facility and the newest, the Gran Muthu Almirante Beach, five-star category hotel, with a high preference and occupancy among foreign and national vacationers.

Meanwhile, Brisas Guardalavaca and Club Amigo Atlántico Guardalavaca are gradually reactivating with international operations, especially from Canada, the main source of tourists to this destination.

Rodríguez also referred to the four hostels located in Gibara: Ordoño, Plaza Colón, Bahía del Almirante and Arsenita, which welcome distinguished visitors who come to this coastal town for high-impact activities, such as the International Film Festival, which recently concluded here.

Cubanacán was created in 1987 as a Cuban tourist company for the development of tourism and today, after gaining international recognition, it transcends with the commercial brands Brisas, Club Amigo, Horizontes, E Hotels and Cubanacán Hotels.
