On an official visit to the Cuban eastern province of Holguín, Sir George Hollingbery, British ambassador to Cuba, recognized the impact of the US blockade on the island and its extraterritorial nature.

“The measures imposed during the Donald Trump government further toughened that policy against Cuba. As a consequence, it is very difficult for most British companies to invest or do business with the largest of the Antilles, mainly because it is impossible to establish any transaction in international banks, due to its connection with the United States”, he pointed out.

The European diplomat, who was received by Yunia Pérez Hernández, deputy governor of the province, said that "even for those investors who have businesses or make investments here, who want to help the people, their visas have been removed to enter United States and closed their bank accounts, including those of relatives.”

Knowing well the damage caused by the blockade to the Cuban people, he said that his country has historically voted against this measure in the United Nations.

During the meeting with Sir George Hollingbery, representatives of the Government and other organizations of the province explained particularities of this northeastern territory.

In this regard, Leonardo Bruzón, head of the Department of Foreign Trade, pointed out that the map of Cuban exports shows 78 Holguín products available, including 60 goods and 18 services.

Currently, tobacco, honey, charcoal, coffee, hot peppers, zeolite, handicraft products, among other goods, are exported to European markets; while services available include the offers of sun and beach tourism, nature, city and cultural tourism in the Holguín destination, one of the main in the country.

Yunia Pérez thanked the visitor for the position that the United Kingdom has always maintained against the US blockade, while highlighting the efforts made by the province to mitigate the effects of the US government's measures, specifically in the midst of the confrontation with COVID-19 pandemic.
