Florence Nightingale, the first great nursing theorist, defined nurses’work as “a higher calling, an honorable calling. Love lies in the love of perfection, consistency, and working hard to achieve it."
Not long ago, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), referring to Nursing personnel, expressed that "they have been on the front line of the fight against epidemics and pandemics that threaten global health", as it has happened for more than two years in the confrontation with COVID-19.
In Cuba, there is no health activity in which they are not present with essential roles in health promotion, disease prevention, health recovery and in the improvement of the patients’quality of life.
In 2020, the WHO paid deserved honor to this profession when it declared the “World Nursing Year", unaware that in the month of March a great pandemic would begin to whip most nations and these professionals would be the mainstay against this disease, which has cost the lives of thousands of people.
However, these health workers remained at their workplaces saving lives, while continuing to attend to prioritized programs such as the Mother and Child care program, the anti-COVID-19 vaccination and self-improvement actions.
They, members of the nursing staff in Cuba, are always there, united to the pain and joy of the patient, sharing hope and also the necessary encouragement in difficult times.
