With the aim of contributing to the extension of agroecological practices, the science sector in the province of Holguín promotes various projects aimed at protecting food sovereignty programs and confronting climate change.

These studies are carried out in prioritized ecosystems of the mountainous area, as well as in the municipalities of Banes, Gibara and Urbano Noris, which have agriculture among their main economic activities with the development of productive poles and demonstration polygons of soils in areas dedicated to cultivation.

An example is the development of varieties resistant to global warming and intense drought, specifically in areas of Urbano Noris, taking into account the use of techniques to increase crop yields and self-sufficiency of the community, said told ACN Graciela Pérez, specialist of the Provincial Meteorological Center.

She added that the main results to date include training in planting pastures and fodder for animal feed, the optimal use of water for irrigation and the use of natural fertilizers, which also contributes to the substitution of imports.

As part of the Life Task plan, the eastern territory also boosts the delivery of high-quality seeds and agronomic methods for the production of viands and vegetables, including the intercropping of different varieties in order to achieve optimal productivity and preservation of the soil.

Norelis Peña, deputy delegate for the environment in CITMA in Holguín, said that monitoring is carried out on more than 200 hectares to implement these agricultural procedures, which are essential for harmony with the environment.

She noted that the provisions include the installation of 47 solar panels to supply water to livestock and around 340 new irrigation systems that benefit more than three thousand hectares.
